Making 45 Degree Cuts on Tiny Bits of WoodIn a desire to cut 45 degree angles for itty-bitty picture frames, first I bought a Chopper, $39.95. When I wasn't satisfied with how that worked, I bought the Easy Cutter, $26.99. When I wasn't satisfied with how that worked, I came up with the Paper Mitre. Priceless. The problem with the first two products isn't that they're bad products, it's that when you work in 1/144, you work with ridiculously small bits of wood. Trying to hold the tiny bits and make a perfect cut is highly frustrating -- and a good way to lose the tip of one's finger.
The "paper mitre" isn't a cutting tool and it doesn't cost a penny.
It's a graphic like the one to the left. While going nuts with a recent project that required no less than 26-perfect 45 degree mitres, it suddenly
occured to me that I could draw the angle better than I could cut it... but if I could draw it, print the drawing, and line up my wood with the drawing...
EUREKA! Okay, so it may not seem like all that big of a discovery (and I'm sure woodworkers everywhere are scoffing), but the Paper Mitre has saved me ENDLESS grief. I've put the graphic in a PDF file (requires the free Adobe Acrobat Program to read) so that you can use it, too. For those who wonder how this works, see the directions below.
